Flmodafinil and Modafinil are 2 compounds from a class of drugs called Eugeroics. These are wakefulness promoting compounds used to treat narcolepsy and other sleep related conditions. Off label, many users take advantage of the psycho stimulating nature of both drugs. Both Flmodafinil and Modafinil keep you alert and provide a subtle boost to the Dopamine system. Flmodafinil is said to carry a higher potency than Modafinil. It’s also much easier to get in some areas making it a viable and even preferred alternative to Modafinil.
Modafinil
Modafinil is of course the gold standard in the Nootropics industry. Products like Modalert have become mainstays in many psychonauts medicine cabinets. As far as all day alertness goes, nothing comes close. Modafinil provides a good level of stimulation without the nasty comedowns typically experienced with amphetamine based drugs like Adderall. It also stacks well with a wide range of cognitive enhancers, although stands well on its own. Combined with your morning coffee, nothing gives a cleaner boost to energy. The effects on the Dopamine system are reportedly weak, lending a fairly high safety profile and low potential for addiction. I will say though the potential for addiction is certainly there, and understated in many cases.
Modafinil comes in 200mg tablet form. Popular brands include Modalert (Sun Pharmaceuticals) and Modvigil (HAB Pharmaceuticals.)
Flmodafinil
Flmodafinil, also called CRL-40,940, NLS-4, or Lauflumide, is a derivative of Modafinil and said to be much stronger. In mice studies, Flmodafinil increased the wake duration to a significant degree compared to Modafinil and the dose required to achieve comparable results was half. This suggests Flmodafinil is indeed a stronger compound. Subjectively I have found this to be the case. While I might need 100 – 200mg of Modafinil (in the form of Modalert or Modvigil), I only require 50 – 75mg of Flmodafinil. I have found however that the duration of effect for Flmodafinil diminishes much faster. It’s one of the reasons I prefer it over Modafinil – I can get to sleep at a reasonable hour. Primary effects last about 6 hours and tapers off by the end of the day. Modafinil seems to linger through the night and provides much longer lasting stimulation. Flmodafinil is much more punchy and harder hitting. 100mg is a rather intense experience especially if you’re sensitive to stimulants. In fact, I’ve ran into trouble dosing Flmodafinil too high and drinking coffee. Panic attacks and trouble breathing are all totally possible with this compound, make no mistake. Caffeine does seem to amplify the stimulating qualities, sometimes to uncomfortable levels.
Flmodafinil will generally come in raw powder form. This makes it slightly less convenient than its predecessor, Modafinil. To properly dose Flmodafinil requires a digital scale sensitive enough to detect small amounts of powder. Cheap 0.01 scales can do the job but weighing small amounts of powder is still a somewhat problematic and tedious task. Cheap scales may fluctuate, especially once you begin pushing the smaller quantities. Accurate measurements are important however, because there is a big difference between 50 and 200mg of powder, but visually it would be hard to tell them apart. This is why the scale is important. I know for a fact many of my subscribers have attempted to eyeball their dose to their own detriment. 200mg of Flmodafinil will get you STACKED if you’re sensitive enough, and it’s easy to take too much if you don’t know what you’re doing.
Factoids
For the nerds, here’s a few quotes from the following study:
Both drugs significantly increased the amount of wakefulness (paired t-test, *P < 0.05) but NLS-4-induced wake duration was significantly higher than that of modafinil (t-test, *P < 0.05). +indicates drug-vehicle value.
Sleep recordings indicated a large increase in wakefulness during the first 4 h after both NLS-4 and modafinil administration as compared to vehicle and NLS-4 at 64 mg/kg induced significantly longer wakefulness duration as compared to modafinil at 150 mg/kg. These results indicate that NLS-4 is more potent wake-promoting drug than modafinil at the doses tested.
Here, we tested in mice the wake-promoting properties of NLS-4 and its effects on the following sleep as compared with those of modafinil and vehicle. C57BL/6J mice were intraperitoneally injected with vehicle, NLS-4 (64 mg/kg), or modafinil (150 mg/kg) at light onset. EEG and EMG were recorded continuously for 24 h after injections and vigilance states as well as EEG power densities were analyzed. NLS-4 at 64 mg/kg induced significantly longer wakefulness duration than modafinil at 150 mg/kg
Conclusion
Personally I enjoy both Modafinil and Flmodafinil. Sometimes it is more convenient to take a tablet rather than measure out powder. However, if I’m looking for something more punchy and aggressive I’ll choose Flmodafinil. It does seem to be stronger not only in terms of dose, but also in effects. I will also select Flmodafinil if getting to sleep at my normal hour is crucial.
On a final note, one important consideration is the legality. In the U.S. Modafinil is a schedule 4 compound while Flmodafinil remains unscheduled. Similar to 1P-LSD, it exists in a grey area because it’s a derivative. It could perhaps fall under the analogue act but as I’ve mentioned regarding 1P, grey is grey because nobody knows for sure!! It’s a risk we all assume as responsible adults.
