2018 is quickly approaching and that means millions of people around the world are rethinking their life and their habits. Gyms love this time of year. For them it’s like printing money as the many well-to-do masses attempt to make good on their “exercise plan.”
Modalert from Modafinil Star served as my first introduction to using any kind of Modafinil. Modafinil believe it or not is something I just started experimenting with having had YEARS of trying and testing pretty much every nootropic under the sun.
Of course I had heard of Modalert and Modafinil as most people tend to rave about this stuff like it’s liquid energy descended from the heavens. Famous bio-hackers like Dave Asprey have admitted to taking Modafinil as a productivity supplement for years at a time. I knew there was something to this but I always failed to find a reliable source.
Needless to say I was more than excited when I got my shipment of Modalert in the mail on an early morning. I took it the same morning and experienced a range of effects throughout the day. Going into the experience, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. Was this going to be like Adderall? Was I going to get high? I didn’t know. I always get a little jittery anytime I take anything I know will effect my body.
About half an hour into taking the 200mg Modalert I noticed an alertness I certainly don’t have on a normal day. It was subtle yet lurking under the surface ready to unleash the full glory. At this time I strapped on my shoes and backpack and headed outside for a nice long walk. I find walking allows me to explore exactly what a substance is doing to me on both the mental and physical level.

By hour 1 the alertness ramped up to stimulant level effects. My heart rate was definitely increased and I felt the slight euphoria you’d feel on any stimulant. Don’t get me wrong though. This stuff is not nearly as powerful as the classic stims you typically hear about. I would describe it as a feeling of being VERY awake and just a sprinkle of mood boost. I imagine this is what people who were blessed with good genetics and high energy levels feel like all the time. I did feel there was something going on with my Dopamine levels although nothing crazy. I felt good and everything seemed good with the world. Music is AMAZING.
This feeling of awakeness lasted until about 3am where I was finally able to catch some Zzz’s.
Modalert side effects
Beside the obvious alertness component to Modalert, I experienced a number of side effects.
Elevated heart rate
The first side effect was a notable increase in heart rate. In healthy individuals I can’t see this being a problem but it’s something to be wary of if you have heart problems. Increased heart rate can also cause anxiety if you’re prone to feeling anxious. If you are an anxious person stimulants are the last thing you want to mess around with.
This is a classic side effect of most stimulants. Throughout the day I was not hungry in the slightest despite working out and going for a 5 mile walk. On a normal day I am absolutely ravenous after a workout session but I had to force myself to eat on Modalert.
Towards the end of the day I developed a slight headache. Drinking a ton of water seemed to cure this. You should be well hydrated before you take the Modalert and ensure you are hydrating throughout the day.
Taken too late in the day and you can kiss your beauty sleep goodbye. I took 200mg at 9am and couldn’t fall asleep until about 3am. Granted, I’m used to staying up late but usually not that late. Disregard this if your plan is to pull an all nighter. In fact, Modafinil is widely used to pull all nighters by truckers, students, party goers, etc.
Funny smelling urine
It took me a couple times of going to the bathroom before I realized what that awful stench was. The Modalert was making my urine smell horrid. Prepare for an olfactory assault as the Modafinil fumes waft their way into your nostrils. It’s like asparagus piss on roids.
That’s about it as far as the side effects I experienced. I’m sure there’s some more out there but those seem to be the ones that effect people across the board.
Is Modalert safe and legit?
Modalert appears to be safe for general use and widely prescribed for Narcolepsy. The side effects are fairly mild with limited use. I would avoid taking Modalert for extended periods of time. Using Modalert everyday will inhibit your sleep. Your quality of sleep on Modafinil is compromised even though you might be able to fall asleep each night. Similar to alcohol, your brain does not go into the deeper cycles of restorative sleep. Overtime this can effect your ability to mentally and physically function. Modalert should be used sparingly. At the very least, cycle your use and only take it 2 – 3 times a week at the maximum.
Is Modalert/Modafinil a nootropic?
People widely consider Modafinil a nootropic. In my personal experience I can’t say the same. Modafinil does not exhibit any nootropic properties. It keeps you awake but does nothing for motivation, focus, or memory. In fact, many users report negative effects on memory with continued use. There’s also too many side effects. The hallmark definition of a nootropic is a compound that boosts cognitive performance, protects the brain, and produces little to no side effects. Modafinil will wake you up but don’t expect to focus or turn into a memory powerhouse. With that said, I can see Modalert stacking very well with true nootropics like Piracetam or L-Tyrosine. Oh yeah, this stuff also GREATLY enhances the effects of caffeine. Get ready for quite a ride if you stack Modalert with your daily caffeine fix.
Modalert is a force to be reckoned with and I will always make sure to have some on hand. I can see it being useful in a thousand different scenarios and it’s a powerful agent to keep you awake. If you have goals and dreams that absolutely must be conquered at all costs, Modafinil is a must have to get large chunks of work done all at once. The applications are endless and it’s a fantastic thing to stack with other nootropics. While I will not use this everyday, it will remain in my medicine cabinet for those rainy days where my mind and body just can’t even.
UPDATE 4.11.18:Duck Dose has officially closed up shop and is out of business. For details and an alternative source for Modafinilcheck out this post.
In this review I’m excited to talk about a Modafinil vendor I found to be extremely responsive, reliable, and high quality. Over the years many Modafinil vendors have come and gone, most notably Modafinil Cat. This paved the way for a host of new suppliers (some shadier than others) to get their foot in the door. Duck Dose hit the scene and began supplying high quality Modafinil in all the various forms.
Last month I reached out to them to secure some samples of their product for testing. I sent an email out in the morning and was promptly responded to later that afternoon. The next day I had a tracking number and received my order within 7 days. This is quick considering this stuff ships from India.
I quickly tore into the package…
Inside I found a sample of Modalert, Modvigil, Armodafinil, and Waklert.
I was stoked to instantly sample the goods, and I did because the package came early in the day. It was actually the perfect time to test it out because the mailman woke me up a number of hours before I’m use to crawling out of bed. I certainly wouldn’t take it in the afternoon otherwise I’d be up all night.
Let’s talk about the quality and effects of each Modafinil derivative.
Duck Dose Modalert
The first product sample I tested was the Duck Dose Modalert. I had previously read that this was the best generic version of Modafinil so of course I wanted to get off on the right foot. I popped a single 200mg tablet and began the waiting game. I was indeed still tired from being awakened from a restful slumber and fought hard to stay awake. Within a half hour I noticed my mind beginning to perk up. I was no longer tired and lethargic. I found this interesting and started planning ways I could take advantage of the day.
It was sunny outside so I went for a long walk followed by some strength training exercises on the monkey bars. An hour in and I was full blown awake like I’ve never been before. While my energy levels are generally decent, I’ve always had a low level mental fatigue. The Modalert completely wiped this out and replaced it with a steady “wakefullness.” It’s not like an energy rush you get from drinking a Redbull or a cup of coffee. It feels much cleaner and steady.
I had a sit down on a nearby bench and noticed a number of physical effects. My heart rate was slightly elevated and I felt a slight dopaminergic component, almost a very slight euphoria experienced using drugs like Adderall. At this point I concluded that Modafinil was indeed a stimulant, despite the conflicting research I read online.
I walked 5 miles listening to music. Music sounded amazing! Almost better than the way music sounds on Phenibut. I returned home and crashed on my bed as my physical body needed rest. My mental state however was still wide awake. I still did not feel tired in the slightest. Not only did I not feel tired, I did not feel hungry. Another classic side effect of a stimulant. I forced myself to eat anyways.
A funny thing about Modafinil is your piss will smell very strange as your body expels the drug. It’s strange indeed. It’s like asparagus piss on roids and you’ll be caught off guard as the fumes come wafting up into your nostils from the toilet.
Even though I took the Modalert around 9am, I could not fall asleep until 3am. Be warned, Modafinil taken too late in the day will keep you up until the wee hours of the morning. This stuff is potent if you need to power through a ton of work.
Modvigil, Armodafinil, Waklert
The following days I also experimented with the other samples. I found Armodafinil to be quite a bit stronger across the board although the effects did not seem to last nearly as long as the Modalert. The Modvigil came in at a very close second in terms of effectiveness and the Waklert was basically useless for me. Perhaps I built up a tolerance from using multiple days in a row.
I will say that all generic forms of Modafinil appear to somewhat effective for most people from the reports I’ve read.
Is Duck Dose Legit?
Every interaction I’ve had with Duck Dose has been 100% legit and a great experience. The product in accordance to my testing is 100% verified and reliable. You can tell they care about their product and making a name for themselves as a high quality Modafinil supplier. They are quick to respond to your emails and the product comes quick considering where it’s coming from (India.)
Overall I can honestly I recommend this supplier and would like to extend a big thanks to them for being so responsive and willing to provide me with some samples.
Modafinil is fantastic stuff for anybody who needs to be AWAKE and alert. I know there are people who take this stuff everyday. I cannot recommend that as you will certainly collect a massive sleep debt and experience health problems down the road. But, for that occasional day when you’re exhausted but have to power through, Modafinil will become your greatest ally to getting whatever it is DONE.
On my desk sits an assortment of various nootropics scattered about. Most of them are bulk powders and are fairly indistinguishable except for their labels. There is one however that sticks out and catches the eye. Modafinil. Modafinil comes in these very professional and pharmaceutical looking tablet strips and looks like serious business. There are 10 to a strip and you pop them out of their sealed packaging straight into your hand. The tablets themselves are nothing fancy. Just a round tablet with an ingrained line down the center.
I was excited to take my first 200mg dose when the package came in the mail from Duck Dose – which by the way will have a very basic shipping label and something scrawled in Hindi directly on the packaging.
The mailman gives you a weird look as if you’ve just ordered drugs or something. This stuff apparently is manufactured in India. Salutes to our fellow Indian brothers and sisters.
Funny enough, the mail guy dropped off the package super early in the morning. He was knocking on my door at 9:30, 2 hours before I get up. My roommates knocked on my door and I stumbled out in a haze of confusion as to what the ruckus was about. I must have been in a deep sleep cycle because even as I looked directly at the mailman I still didn’t know what was happening. He was handing me some kind of device with a pen. Then it clicked in my head.
I signed for the Modafinil and tore into the package.
What better moment to take some Modafinil than when you’re 2 hours underslept? Pop went the weasel and I washed down my first 200mg tablet with some water. I cracked open my laptop to check my daily stats for a couple websites I run. These things tend to hit me fairly quickly. I could already begin to feel something working at the 10 minute mark, something lurking underneath the surface ready to unleash its full power. By 30 minutes I could definitely tell I was fully awake. The stark change in my state of mind was interesting. Just 30 minutes ago I was in some kind of deep wave dream state and now I was in fully conscious and aware mode.
The Modafinil experience is somewhat difficult to put into words because it’s not like you really “feel” anything other than extreme wakefulness. Is this what all the cool kids call “woke” these days?
I grabbed my guitar to determine how music sounded and if I could play any better. For me, the litmus test of any nootropic or drug is how I interact with my guitar. Since I am familiar with the guitar I can detect any changes in creativity or how certain chords sound. Playing was quite pleasurable. In fact, I played for quite some time before getting dressed and hitting the streets. If it’s one thing I do EVERYDAY it’s go on a nice long walk. I am fortunate to have various business endeavors that afford me this luxury of walking whenever I want.
At the hour mark I noticed the simple wakefulness amplified. I was experiencing all the classic signs of taking a stimulant. Accelerated heart rate, cessation of appetite, slight mood boost etc. Dopaminergic vibes indeed. I remembered reading a bunch of stuff online about how Modafinil wasn’t a true stimulant and carried no addictive properties. I promptly disregarded these statements after analyzing the effect in my own body. I recognized how the effects were very similar to adderall, except not nearly as intense and much cleaner. Researching the mechanisms further proves Modafinil does increase dopamine and functions in similar ways to classic stimulatory compounds. The above research link showed that mice with no Dopamine transporters do not respond to anti-narcoleptic medication. This suggests Dopamine does play a part in Modafinil although we still do not understand how exactly.
I made a mental note to use sparingly as to avoid addiction and tolerance.
Modafinil and focus
Modafinil by itself does not immediately turn you into a focus machine. For me it displays nothing in regard to enhanced mental performance. Despite having a Dopamine component, I noticed no change in motivation or willingness to be productive. It does one thing very well – waking you up and keeping you up ALL DAY while ever so slightly elevating your mood. Taken too late in the day and you will surely be kicking yourself in the ass at 4am wondering why you took it so late. Experience is the best teacher.
Modafinil for the mental performance seeker is perhaps not the BEST option, but is an interesting compound to add to your run-of-the-mill focus stack like Piracetam + Alpha-GPC + L-Tyrosine. Talk about SERIOUS mental output at this point.
Towards the end of the day I was still fully awake and effortlessly blasted through the pesky 2 – 4pm energy slump, getting lots of work done on the laptop. later I noticed the slight indicators of an oncoming headache. I knew it was too good to be true! Drinking water helped a ton and soon dissipated completely. One other side effect – this stuff will make your piss smell absolutely terrible!
I think it was about 3 or 4am before I was finally able to sleep. I slept through the whole night and actually felt surprisingly refreshed when I woke up at my normal hour.
Overall the experience was fantastic and I fully endorse Modafinil as a general compound to wake you up and as a great component to add to a focus stack. Great stuff when you have to power through work or school on little to no sleep. I see Modafinil as an occasional use type nootropic due to its potential for addiction. Modafinil is not a replacement for sleep and the body accrues a sleep debt that will be paid in one form or another.
In otherwords, sleep!
In the future I will be giving a full review of Modafinil and all the variants (Modalert, Modvigil, Armodafinil, Artvigil, Waklert.)
This post marks the last review and final verdict regarding my experimentation with TruBrain. It’s been an exciting 7 days using this stack and there have been ups and downs.
Let’s start with some positives. First, I like the fact that you can feel TruBrain working straight away. Using both the drink packets and the capsules, both forms of the formula had a decent kick from day 1. The drinks are particularly tasty, much more palatable than the usual suspects (5 hour energy.)
I love the ingredients in TruBrain. Most of the listed ingredients are nootropics I frequently talk about on a regular basis and generally stack well together. Both the drinks and the packets deliver a nice boost in mood and it’s easy to sustain focus for hours at a time. I found myself happily engaging on a social level. This is Something I typically avoid as most social situations repulse me and I must exert willpower to socialize. You tend to realize the nootropics must be working when it’s the other person trying to eject from the conversation haha. Like I said, there is a strong mood boosting and somewhat pro-social element to the stack. Your mileage may vary.
Overtime however I found myself becoming quite irritable. The racetams in particular have a tendency to do this. I can handle continued Piracetam use but the Oxiracetam for me was a bit much and made me manic. I do take Oxiracetam but in very small doses, or if I’m fatigued. It’s extremely stimulating for my brain. Too much so in large amounts.
And while I love L-Tyrosine, this is not something you want to take everyday even though this is something TruBrain recommends. L-Tyrosine competes directly with Serotonin for absorption into the brain and the extra amino acid on either side wins. In simpler terms, taking L-Tyrosine daily can deplete Serotonin levels overtime and cause anxiety and insomnia among other things. I found this out first hand a while ago.
There are also 2 ingredients in TruBrain which you build tolerance to. The first major one being caffeine and the second L-Theanine. These compounds lose their potency over time and are best cycled. This is another reason why TruBrain should not be used as a daily driver.
Overall the stack is decent, it tastes good, and delivers results. I just don’t think it’s something to take everyday.
The final verdict? If you have the money and don’t want to spend countless hours researching and testing powders then TruBrain is a solid option. It’s got real nootropics inside, nootropics I endorse. However, keep your expectations in check because these pre made stacks can disappoint (or completely blow you away depending on your brain chemistry.)
I would like to give TruBrain a shout out and big thanks for sending me some of their product for an honest review. Their customer service is stellar. From the time I reached out to the time I got the product was a matter of days. I’m still waiting on product from a number of companies who have said they’d ship me samples. I have yet to see anybody else come through on their agreement. Mad props!!
